Weekend Noise

At the weekends I am regularly disturbed by groups of youths standing around their cars, drinking, shouting, occasionally fighting or running up and down the street screaming, all to the accompaniment of powerful car stereos. This tends to happen at midnight, when, I presume, they are getting ready to join the queue for Mango's, and then around 03:00 to 04:00 am.

I have started this blog in order to record specific instances of this disturbance. I ended up calling it Pennington Street Noise but I am well aware that Breezers Hill also suffers from the same problem and I would be surprised if the other streets in the area were not affected.

If you live in the area, please comment on here whenever you suffer from noise of this kind.

Having recently moved to London, now based in Artichoke Hill the noise of people talking loud at stupid o'clock in the morning is just ridiculous! Car's racing off etc not to mention the rubbish that is left hanging around. I thought it was a nice place to live, but now I'm not so sure!

Many thanks for the comment. It should be a nice place to live. If we can persuade the authorities to take an active interest in these problems - as they should do - then it WILL be a nice place to live.

My boyfriend and I have lived on Pennington Street in a ground floor Artichoke Hill flat for a year now and this incessant noise pollution, anti-social behaviour and littering has been a relentless feature of every weekend. As our ground floor bedroom borders the pavement where the groups of youths park their cars and congregate to drink, fight and blast loud Bangra music, we have to sleep literally metres from this abomination. I am regularly woken up in the early hours of the morning by the chaos and end up opening my window to confront the perpetrators directly. I have seen fights take place on the small metal walk way that leads to our front door and brawls take place in the road. Perhaps even more enraging is that during one such instance, I looked out to see a Mango's security attendant clearly marked in a flourescent jacket, casually observing the anti social behaviour without any attempt to intervene. Quite a contradiction to Mango's rules which they so hypocritically post on the wall outside the venue. These rules state that all patrons must leave the club quitely to avoid disturbing local residents and that violence is not tolerated, though clearly these are more of a token gesture than rigorously enforced rubric. This nuisance isnt just confined to the night though, for days afterwards I find smashed glass lining the pavement and even empty alcohol bottles chucked on our private walkway. The granules of glass then get brought in the house on the soles of our shoes and only last week I cut the bottom of my foot on a shard of clear glass I found in our hallway. Is it even legal to drink in the street? Can tower hamlets not make it an anti drinking zone and fine those caught violating this? Not to mention the illegal parking, trespassing on private property, the littering, the blatant contravening of noise pollution legislation? Why have the police not set up a patrol in the specific hours this will inevitably take place?

Firstly, many thanks for your valuable contribution. I have to say, your story is horrifying. I've started this blog to try and record the harassment that we - and you more than most - suffer. Please come back and record any further incidents with as much detail (dates/times/car makes and number plates) as possible. I really am sorry that you have to suffer in the way you describe - it really is an outrage.

I live on the bottom floor in Artichoke Hill and the noise on a Friday and Saturday is unbearable. The noise starts from 9pm with groups of Asian men drinking outside the flat before going into Mango’s leaving litter and broken bottles. Cars park on double yellow lines within five meters of my bedroom so that when the car stereos start it shakes the bedroom windows and it is impossible to sleep. When people leave Mango’s they loiter on Pennington Street and are extremely aggressive with fights regularly breaking out. Many times I have seen people in my walkway shouting at women. They then sit in their cars listening to music on full blast, speeding up and down the street. This usually occurs from 2am until as late as 5am. I also question whether the individuals driving are over the limit?

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. It sounds absolutely hellish where you are. I also find it hard to believe that the drivers have been sticking to orange juice...There's no reason anyone should have to put up with the kind of thing you have reported. Get in touch with your local councillor - I've put a link up on the blog. I have found them very helpful and receptive.

Thank-you for creating this blog. It is by far a much more productive approach than the many that have raced though my mind after being woken by the noise from Mango patrons for well over year now.

You are most welcome. We have to fight back and show the authorities the evidence of the very real problem we have here. Keep the comments coming!

The noise on Friday 19th September was unbearable. My girlfriend and I were woken up at 3am by groups of men swearing, shouting and loitering around our front door. This noise persisted until 4.45am! The next morning there was smashed glass, plastic bottles, hundreds of flyers for Mango’s and McDonalds litter strewn across the street where they had simply thrown it out of their cars. Surely Mango’s should have to take some form of accountability for the terrible state of the street?

That sounds absolutely hellish. It would be good if you could email Daniel.Oyebanjo@towerhamlets.gov.uk. He is the council's investigation officer looking into the noise/harassment problem around here. I met Mr Oyebanjo on the 16th of this month and I hope to hear back from him in the next couple of weeks. One of the criteria he will be looking at prior to meeting with Mango's is the state of the street after a club night. That's all well and good but I can't imagine it offers much consolation when you have to suffer the stress caused by this regular disturbance. Thanks for leaving your comment. I remain optimistic that the cumulative effect of our complaints will eventually get us somewhere.
